How to Prepare a Perfect Cortado

Content

The cortado combines the intensity of espresso with the smoothness of hot milk, creating a perfect balance in every cup. Served in a small cup, it's ideal for those seeking a coffee with a rich flavor and creamy texture. Discover how to prepare a cortado at home simply and deliciously.

Ingredients and Equipment:

  • 100cc cup
  • 40 grams of ground coffee (ideal for espresso)
  • Espresso machine
  • Precision scale
  • Tamper
  • Milk frother

Steps to Prepare a Cortado

1. Heat the Cup

Place the 100cc cup in the espresso machine to warm it up. This helps maintain the coffee's temperature for longer.

2. Adjust the Grind

Set your grinder 2 notches coarser than usual. Proper grinding is key for good extraction.

3. Measure the Coffee

Measure 40 grams of ground coffee using the precision scale. Distribute the coffee evenly in the portafilter and press down with the tamper until you obtain a flat surface.

4. Place the Cup

Place the cup under the extraction nozzles of the espresso machine.

5. Extract the Coffee

Start the extraction and count between 25 and 35 seconds. You should get between 40 and 50 grams of coffee in the cup.

6. Froth the Milk

While the coffee is brewing, heat and froth the milk until it is creamy and has a smooth texture.

7. Combine and Serve

Pour the frothed milk over the espresso in the cup, filling it to the top. The result is a balanced cortado, with the intensity of the espresso softened by the milk.

Tips to Improve Your Cortado

  • Coffee Freshness: Use freshly roasted beans for more vibrant flavors.
  • Consistency in Grinding: Make sure the grinding is uniform to avoid uneven extraction.
  • Water Temperature: Keep the water between 90 and 96°C for optimal extraction.

Equipment Cleaning: Clean your espresso machine and accessories regularly to avoid residual flavors.
